Our Learning and Progress Updates
There have been so many highlights in Year 6 this term. The children have really enjoyed our Amazon Rainforest topic where they have learnt about the Jaguar Tribe – a group of indigenous people- that live a very basic life in the Amazon Rainforest. They have enjoyed finding out about how they hunt, what they eat and the struggles they are facing as deforestation increases. In PE this term, the children have created their own whole class Gymnastic routine. It has been great to see so many children shine and show off talents we didn’t know they had. Mrs Cunningham is continuing to support them in making their Marionettes in DT – we are looking forward to the puppet show they will be putting on to the rest of the school once they are finished.
We celebrated World Book week two weeks ago. The children loved finding out about their favourite authors, hunting for famous quotes, around the school, from different children’s stories and guessing which story it was from. They also had the opportunity to enter our writing competition. A crime scene was also set up in Year 6 where the children were asked to write the opening to a murder mystery story. Highlights still to come this term are the Junior Citizen event which the Year 6s will be attending at Epsom Downs. Here they will learn about how to stay safe in lots of different scenarios. We have our theatre trip next Wednesday to watch the Howard of Effingham pupils perform Sister Act and also our Sports Relief day on the 23rd March. Two pupils from each class will be selected to take part in a teacher/pupil Dodgeball tournament as well as all children taking part in a carousel of sports activities throughout the day.
The year 6 pupils approached another round of formal SATS practice papers last month with focus and confidence. New Booster groups have been put in place to support those, in areas they are finding more difficult. The booster groups are led by Mr Myers, Mrs Ketteringham and Mrs Cole. Mrs Clarkson is continuing to run her handwriting group for those who need to improve the presentation of their written work and Mrs Willemse is running a morning Booster for reading before school.
